Isn't the idea of a Royal Family a bit outdated?

I mean, we live in times, where the one's born into high places are not the one's that rule. It's all about hard work, and here in the United States, we show it, The top spot isn't hereditary. It's The President of the United States. To get there you have to work your way up there. You are not just born, and suddenly 'Oh, he's going to be President some day'. No. Maybe some countries (I'm looking at you Britain) Can follow in our footsteps.

Royal family is totally outdated and unfit for purpose, But Donald Trump??? he is a disaster for the USA and the world, Democracy in action.

Maybe it is outdated. Can you explain what's wrong with having some outdated things around? Something being older does not necessarily mean it's bad. The UK system of a constitutional monarchy has been in place in its current form since before the US was a country, and in a slightly different form for some centuries before that. They must be doing something right.

Well, yes. So are a lot of things. Just take one aspect of human existence - transport. People like riding horses. There are far more efficient ways of getting around. People like steam trains - but they're dirty, slow (compared to some types anyway) and incredibly inefficient. People like owning their own car - or even more than one! Even if they live in a city! Society should provide exceptional public transport at very low cost (some cities even charge NOTHING for some types of public transport) - and yet people like sticking with the old ways.

Why does the US have a system where the government is shut down until the budget is approved, potentially putting hundreds of thousands of public servants out of work? Here in the UK if the budget isn't approved that is a vote of no confidence in the government and there is an election - and so it almost never happens.

I think that you ought to do some research into what the role of the Monarch is before asking a question like this !

The Monarch is not comparable to the President.

The Prime Minister is the UK equivalent to the American President .. and the Prime Minister is elected .. and has the power.

Are you seriously suggesting that the U.K become more like America? SERIOUSLY?

  • A royal family saves us from disasters like Donald Trump. What's more they are cheap. The crown estate is the monarch's personal property (mostly grabbed from the church by Henry VIII) but the whole of the profit from managing it goes to the exchequer. In return, the exchequer pays the cost of royalty. We're currently making around £200 million a year on the deal. I know Trump claims not to be drawing a salary, but I doubt whether he'd be prepared to pay $300 million a year for the privilege of being your head of state.
