Flour, water, Into a stiff on the dry side dough. 1 pinch salt. Bake at 400f or 200f. At 400f light brown then move to oven at 200f to dry. For cheap. In the civil war. There were 200 Federal recipes for hard tack. Sub noted every village has a way. Wheat, whole wheat or rye flour is used. Can have sugar, honey, syrup in it, can have lard or oil added to it. Boston stile had soda or baking powder added to it. More like a salteen cracker today. Roll into a thin sheet. Poke some holes in it with a nail. So it dries even when baking. There was a guide as to what & how much of what added to it was to be paid by the pound for it. Ration was 9 to 10 squares a day for troops. But extra could normally be had. As many refused to eat it if they caught a rat or better food.
