Why didn't the caravan just drive right into ths USA? Why go to a port of entry if there is no wall?

They were warned that if they enter the USA illegally ("without inspection") they make themselves ineligible to receive asylum or refugee status.

Some of them were apparently listening to the President’s rhetoric. But how many crossed without inspection while the others created distractions at the official crossings is unknown.
