What's the name of this young adult book?

There's a novel written by a social worker in the 1960s or 1970s about an intelligent teenage girl living in a New York City welfare hotel room with her mother and younger brother and sister. Although the mother and the two younger siblings are broken by the system, the oldest girl is determined to finish high school and go to college. What is the name of this book, please, and who is the author?

Update:

The book may have been called "The Diary of A.N." The protagonist's younger brother was Charles, age 12. The author may have had a long Jewish surname beginning with N. So far, I can't find the book online.

Update 2:

Yes, it is The Diary of A.N. by Julius Horwitz.

Have you read a novel by Betty Smith, called "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn"? If you haven't, you should, because it was written in 1943, and the storyline is so similar to the one you've posted, that it almost borders on plagiarism.

With that in mind, I, too, would like to know who wrote the novel you described.

EDIT. Is The Diary of An: the story of the house on West 104th Street, by Julius Horwitz the book you're looking for?

(Found that on a French website)
