Health Question: Any reason for dark toenails?

I read online that a dark, brownish shade on your toenails could be a sign of a kidney infection or an iron deficiency. But I didn't buy into it or worry myself too much because I don't believe everything I read online. So I went to my doctor a couple days ago, and he said that I'd be showing more signs if I had a problem with my kidneys or iron.

He said he'd look into dark toenails more and give me a call when he finds an answer.

What do you guys think? How can I get my toenails a normal shade? Thanks in advance :)

Update:

After he checked them out, Doc said it wasn't a fungal infection. Forgot to add that part.

Possibly Fungal infection. It resolves within months. Fungal infections of the toes are relatively treatable at home when caught early. Over-the-counter ointments, creams, and polishes are usually effective. Severe cases may require a prescription antifungal treatment.

One or two often indicate a fungal infection of the toenails. But if all of yours are dark not sure what that would be.

I am surprised your Doctor did not mention a Fungus Infection.
