I have windows 7 desktop and use a HP mouse (not wireless). All of a sudden it is going all over the place and I can't slow it down???
The mouse is several years old. Not sure if it uses batteries. I went into control panel/mouse and moved it to "slow" but that didn't work. Is there anything I can do outside going out and buying another one. It just all of a sudden started acting up and I don't remember changing anything. Thanks.
I unplugged the mouse and plugged it in again but it still was going crazy. I did it a couple more times, did a restart of the computer, and now it seems to have calmed down to a normal pace. I'll keep you posted. I have a feeling this isn't over yet but thank you so much for your wonderful suggestions. They have helped tremendously.
Apparently the mouse is shot. I just put a new one on. Working great. Thanks everyone.

Are you using a wireless mouse? If so, try to unplug the USB part that is plugged in to the computer. If it's wired, just unplug it from the computer by following the wire. It sounds like the mouse you're using has a DPI setting on it. The DPI setting stands for dots per inch (DPI), and is a measurement of how sensitive a mouse is. The higher the DPI the more 'dots' the mouse moves per inch.
If you can find out what type of mouse you have that may help get to a quick resolution.

You cannot use an optical mouse on an uneven surface such as glass or some mouse pads.
Use it directly on your desk or put a sheet of white paper under it.
Try this, and this may stabilize your mouse and eliminate the erratic behaviour.

This is generally a signal that the wires connecting mouse to PC are touching each other, sending signals to Windows that the mouse is moving when it is not. This has happened to me. Just buy a new mouse and the problem will disappear instantly.

look at the icon for the mouse pointer you have probably SCROLLED IT(which happens because you dont realise you can also CLICK the WHEEL down). press escape or click a button to get it back. you might also have a hand near the mousepad which is NOT deactivated when you add the 2nd mouse.
