It is a reference to the Eucharist and means that the Word of God made flesh IS eternal Life itself.

Jesus always used illustrations, signs and symbols in his teachings. When people did not understand what he was talking about, they left him. His apostles and those who really wanted to know what he was talking about, went to him and he would explain what they meant. It's the same today, many have read the Bible but actually do not understand the signs, illustrations and symbols therein. It is like that Ethiopian eunuch who was reading the account about Jesus in Isaiah. He admitted that he did not understand and needed guidance in learning what it said. (Acts 8:26-40) Jehovah's Witnesses are the only ones, that I know of, that understands what the symbols such as: earth, sea, world, Babylon the Great, beasts, horns, hail and so forth mean when used in illustrations. I invite you to learn what the Bible really teaches from the international website, jw.org and Bible Teachings > Bible Questions Answered. Watch videos such as Does God have a Name? What is God's Kingdom? Why did God Create the Earth? Why did Jesus Die? and Why Study the Bible? If you believe what you learned, you can request your free personal Bible study online or from the next witness who knocks on your door or by visiting your neighborhood Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. There is never a collection taken and all are welcome. Thank you for this question.

This was a proclamation of one of his I AM statements. I am the bread of life, i.e. Jesus, God, the bread of life.

John 6:49, 50 Jesus says:
“I am the bread of life. Your forefathers ate the manna in the wilderness and yet they died.
This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever; and for a fact, the bread that I will give is my flesh in behalf of the life of the world.”

Manna is not a bread but a substance used for making bread. The "Bread of Life" is a metaphoric representation on Jesus who nourishes the spirit.

The metaphor suggested is that which nourishes the spirit. The purpose of "manna" is given in OT history.
