India looks to overtake China in population. Is that a good thing?

    It is not a good thing that India's population is rising because a significant amount of the most populous coastal areas of the subcontinent will be underwater in the not-to-distant future. About 2 years ago, India TImes reported that the population along India's at-risk low-lying coastlines was expected to triple in the next few decades, while the seas are expected to rise. The report was called "A Region at Risk."

    China and India are the two most populous countries of the world. China is the most populous country with approximately 1.42 billion people in 2018. India is second largest country by population with approximately 1.35 billion inhabitants in 2018.

    China and India together account for 36.28% of total world population.

    They have about the same fertility rate although India's is somewhat higher.

    Both have poor healthcare systems.

    India's birthrate is almost below replacement level and that's a good thing.
