Melanomas are funny in that they grow very, very slowly and then very, very fast. Think of a tattoo. There s so little blood supply in the layer of skin where they re placed that they can take decades to fade. Melanomas begin in that same layer and with so little blood supply, they grow super slow —but they do grow. Once they get deep enough to hit the blood filled layers under the skin, they grow super fast and spread all over. That s why where they appear is important. In places like the head, where the skin is thin, they can quickly spread to the skull. In other places they can take years to take root, so to speak. But make no mistake, once they hit pay dirt, you re in trouble.

Yes it is very serious, and yes, you can die. My father did.

My husband's grandfather died because his melanoma spread to other parts of his body. So, yes, it can be fatal if it isn't caught and treated in time.

Melanoma can indeed be fatal if left untreated, or if it spreads inward to other organs of the body besides the skin. If you're having a "superficial" melanoma removed, that means you are lucky and it hasn't spread. Get it taken off, and start checking with your dr. regularly to see that you don't have any more skin lesions.

The issue with melanoma of the skin is, it can spread internally if it takes a notion to do so. Doctors recommend getting that taken care of ASAP. It's the most "deadly" of skin cancer and not something to fool around with.

Loads of information online about it (and everything else!)

It is possible for melanoma to kill but it doesn't always.

Talk to your treating doctor regarding likely outcome in your situation.

Did the doctor say it was melanoma?

Melanoma can be fatal. If it spreads into other parts of your body - you could have just months to live. YES. It can be THAT serious. So you're lucky your cancer was superficial. The following I found online. " Superficial spreading melanoma is by far the most common type, accounting for about 70 percent of all cases. This is the one most often seen in young people. As the name suggests, this melanoma grows along the top layer of the skin for some time before penetrating more deeply."
