Why isn't a person who argues considered smart in this scenario, although lawyers always argue, and they are pretty smart?

Once, I saw a boy arguing with his father at a store, and the boy said "I'm smart. Don't you know?", and his father said that "A person who argues isn't considered smart."

He probably just said that to have the last say, even though it isn't necessarily true.

The father was wrong. Merely arguing in and of itself isn't an indication that someone isn't smart. The father was just trying to shut the kid up.

There are situations in which continuing to argue isn't smart, but they vary case by case.

Lawyers are professional "arguers" -- that's their job -- so their arguments fall outside of the scope of day-to-day discourse.

It depends on what you mean by argue. If you mean in making a case for a position, that is smart. If you mean arguing with an irrational person over and over again, no so much. Professional arguments only work with rational people attempting to figure things out or make a case for something as in the case for Lawyers.

arguments in general are not productive, making most arguments "not smart"
