Windows 7 freezing at 4-pane window while loading..?
I backed up the PC a short while ago, and I'm pretty sure my external hard-drive introduced a virus / worm / trojan.. Thoughts on how to diagnose / fix it, using .. F2 and the Safeboot?

Download from here https://www.avg.com/en-ww/download.prd-arl. AVG rescue disk and burn it to a CD or blank USB. You may need a working computer if yours is badly infected. Boot off the CD/USB and follow the prompts. If you need help in creating a bootable CD or USB update your post. After that your computer should be clean.
Once your computer is up and running I would also download Malwarebytes antimalware from bleeping computers

Run it to check for any malware that AVG missed

a virus or trojan needs the operating system to load to work , that code usually means a corrupt registry , you need to do a REPAIR install ( not a re-install) using an installation DVD, if you know what you are doing you can use a boot disk to replace the registry files F8 comes AFTER the F2 and F11 options you have to be quick
