Did anyone actually bet on the Kentucky Derby?

I never knew horse racing can have so much controversy. A 65-1 won because of it and whoever bet won big because of it.

Racing is a contest. It basically is an evaluation of chapion breeder patterns.

    There's even mule races.

The races are really based on the "breeders cup".

Gambling, betting are not a part of racing except the owners by entering their animals 'bet' their animal will win against the other owners animals.

So trying to evaluate horse racing by the audience kinda makes you a moron.

  • There was just over $250 million (US) wagered on the race.

Sure! Though it's not for everyone, it's an exciting sport for others. Whether one chooses to gamble or not, the Kentucky Derby does bring out a lot of people. The fact is one doesn't have to be a horse racing fan to love the Kentucky Derby. There really isn't much controversy in this sport, especially what we saw today. In fact this is the first time in 145 years, the horse who finished first in the Kentucky Derby was disqualified making this Kentucky Derby one for the books, a 'Historic Controversial Finish.'

There are many once a year Kentucky Derby long shot betters out there. My mother is one of them, she liked the name Country House, his Stride & trainer so she did a spot bet on him. Kudos to her.

    (Interesting question)!

Horse racing fans tend to be gamblers. It's a status symbol, like playing at Monte Carlo on the Riviera.
