What is the religious significance, or message besides the pain it would obviously have on a person. forgive my curiosity.

The Physical wounds of Christ are those He took in our stead. We humans are the ones who deserved punishment for our sins and unbelief and wickedness - we deserved to die eternally, but in order that we could live for eternity with God in heaven, Jesus Christ took our punishment for us.
Therefore, His wounds are not merely physical ones, such as the scars in His hands and feet from the nails that nailed Jesus to the Cross of Calvary, and where the Roman Soldiers stabbed Him in His side so that blood and water poured out but Jesus' scars will be the ones in His emotions - in His very heart, because Jesus yearned for all those human beings who reject Him and deny Him, because He knows they will spend eternity in Hell, in torment in the flames of fire and brimstone, when they could have been with Him in heaven if only they had listened and received and accepted Jesus' sacrifice for our sins. That's what He died for.
That is heart-breaking to Jesus on behalf of those who reject His painful sacrifice for them because He died for everyone to be saved, but many people won't be, because they prefer instead to deny Him and reject His painful and expensive sacrifice for their sins which cost Him His very life, when He shed His blood for us all, and that means their eternity will be in Hell, separated from God's very life for them, when they could have spent eternity with Jesus Himself - the very One who died for them.

Christ suffered a painful and insulting death. He was beaten, mocked, scourged and crucified. However, His greatest suffering was in the Garden of Gethsemene where Christ took upon Himself the effects of all the sins and sorrows of the world. It is here where He shed His blood for all mankind.
"And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground." Luke 22:44
There were many people who suffered the same kind of death as Jesus. Thousands were crucified in 70 ad when Rome sacked Jerusalem. The importance of the death of Jesus is that He was resurrected on the third day. The wounds in His hands and feet are reminders of His death and resurrection which undid the effects of the fall of Adam and made resurrection effective to all.
"But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive." First Corinthians 15:20-22

The only scar in our Christian religion is the nail scars in the hands of Jesus and he said, "He left them there that when we been in Heaven for awhile and should see him, the scars in his hands will remind us the price he paid for our Salvation"....there is no other scars that can be as important as them.....and he also said, "He left the image of the Cross before man that they would know what true love means"...thanks for asking....

He was lashed 39 times with a cat o nine tails (whip). These had leather thongs with bits of rock and metal tied to their ends. When the body was struck they would embed themselves deep in his skin and muscles. And when pulled back they would tear out huge chunks of tissue.
He was viciously beaten
His crown of thorns pierced his head
He had huge nails (like railroad spikes) driven into his hands and feet to hold him to the cross.
His side was pierced with a spear after his death in order "to make sure"
>>What is the religious significance<<
The wounds fulfilled OT prophecy
Behold how every wound of His
A precious balm distils,
Which heals the scars that sin had made,
And cures all mortal ills.
Those wounds are mouths that preach
His grace;
The ensigns of His love;
The seals of our expected bliss
In paradise above.
