How to say "interrupted his studying"?

The sentence below seems to be grammatically correct, but how do native speakers say it?

1.Taking a year off to travel interrupted his studying.

    Taking a year off to travel halted his academic studies. (or interfered with his studies).

    Or undermined his education.

    "his studies". "Studies" means attendance at a school. "Studying" means sitting down with a book related to a class.
