Throw out the pasta (even the whole wheat pasta), white rice, anything made with white flour, and all foods that have added sugar.
Throw out all carbonated and alcoholic drinks.
Eat protein (lean is best: chicken, turkey, fish, salmon, beans .. not green beans, but chickpeas, black beans, lentils, etc)
Vegetables (only small servings of potatoes or corn)
Complex carbohydrates (whole wheat, steelcut oatmeal, brown rice, brown basmati rice)
Fruit
Some dairy: milk, yogurt, cheese
Half of your plate should be vegetables, 1/4 protein, 1/4 complex carbs.
Read the labels on what foods you buy Look up other foods on websites such as "calorie king".
The AIM is to increase fiber and reduce carbohydrates. And to eat lots of veggies.
Total daily grams of carbs MINUS total daily grams of fiber SHOULD BE <300g.
Daily exercise is also important, as well as keeping your weight down to a healthy weight.
I didn't, and now I AM Type 2 Diabetic.

You only need to avoid simple carbs like white sugar, pasta, white bread, potatoes, white rice, white flour. Eat complex carbs like wheat bread, brown rice, veggies, baked chicken and fish and try to keep sugar intake to a small amount.

Lots of green vegetables, there are low carb breads. Walmart has a large selection. Fish, chicken, lunch meat, turkey, turkey bacon, if you want pasta it will have to be a very small serving like half a cup. When your craving something sweet try fruit or sugar free gum to stop snacking in between meals. There are also low sugar juices such as minute maid light lemonade and fruit punch. Thoses have like 4 carbs 3 sugars for one 8oz serving.
