Do people really profit by stealing an ATM?
This has been going on for decades, I just saw another one on tonights news, a gang stole an ATM, they didn't give details but I assume they hooked a strong chain around it and ripped it out with a big SUV. But don't we have the technology to prevent that? Cant they put a GPS in the thing so that it can be tracked?
Cant they put a dye bomb in it that destroys the cash when its either tilted or disconnected from its power source without authority?
An ATM may contain up to $100,000 in cash if its full but is it really that simple, does the gang just have to bust the thing open and score some easy cash? Or do they just get unusable bills soaked in dye?

The people that own the atm definitely won't want to destroy the cash as a security measure if the power goes out or if it gets tipped over.

The alternative is to blow one apart 'in situ', using oxy-acetylene gas mixture and very very long match. This may kill you though, and the money tends to fly about a lot.

You're right to state that an ATM could be engineered so that the notes inside are made useless ,if the ATM is "tampered" with.
But the cost -- both retro fitting ,and new, would far outweigh the losses sustained in such robberies.
