you don't need yoga mat always. Yogis in the past didn't have yoga mats to practice on. Yet they practiced yoga and perfected it. I myself don't use the mat while doing standing poses, because it is not required. I do use it while doing the sitting poses and while doing varies poses laying down, when I practice indoors. You may even use a normal cotton mat or just do it on flat levelled grass outdoors, without any mat. So to the question, Do you really require something like a yoga mat always, the answer is no not really. But yoga mats are designed for it's purpose. It gives a semi soft platform which cushions your bones while changing poses and when your body weight is shifting on the bones. Secondly yoga mat gives a nice grip to hold the poses, which other kind of mats like cotton mats or straw mats won't give you. If you have glossy floor or stone floor, yoga mats are the best platform to practice yoga on and I do recommend for you to use it. But if you practice on a wooden floor, you don't really require a yoga mat.
