Can you just shave all of a poodle's fur off?

My parents aren't going to pay for regular trips to the groomer.

Also, I'm not a troll. Please don't remove my question. Just actually answer it.

I had a Miniature Poodle for 19 years and I trimmed him myself after taking him to groomers for the first 2 years. I purchased very nice clipper an Oster A5 and 4 blades, a book on grooming and clips and went for it. I set up on my patio a card table and put a harness on my doggie and had him tied straight up, he couldn't fall off of the edge and I took my time, I learned how to trim between the toes, the face, under side and such. Please don't shave your down so close that he will sun burn, because he will and will be in such pain, itchy and tender. Be careful of the ears, lots of amateurs have cut the ears, bleeds profusely and is had to heal. Good Luck!

A poodle will need grooming every 6-8 weeks. Should have done your research before you got the dog. You don't just "shave all the fur off". It will cause more problems with skin, etc. to do that.

Find the dog a new home if you can't afford grooming every 2 months.

Yes, you can. You will need a put out a little money to get a dog clipper & 2 or 3 most commonly used blades. About $150.00. There are videos on how to clip a poodle. You can use a #7 blade to shave off all the coat & that will last about 10 12 weeks, you'll need to do it again. There are all kinds of clips for Poodles & you can gradually teach your self how to do them.

Your first 3 or 4 will look quite odd but as you get more experience on how to hold the clippers & always aim to go UNDER a mat, not through it with a clippers.

You don't shave a poodle - you can do a short clip once shown how. It's also a careful trimming around the feet, the face, and the ears. If you parents won't pay for the proper care of a poodle, then perhaps you need a breed that does not benefit from frequent trips to the groomers. Get a part time job to pay for the grooming yourself. Pets are expensive - if they won't pay for grooming, then what about other vet care? Vaccines, spay or neuter, monthly heartworm medication and flea treatment, periodic worming and vet checks. There is much more to having a dog than just getting it - they come with a financial responsibility for their care. A good quality set of clippers is not cheap, nor is a vet visit if you've cut the dog's skin or burned it from shaving too close.

I agree with TB12, that you can do it yourself, but follow some reasonable guidelines. Depending on the dog, you can use sheers, or an inexpensive clipper with attachments. If all the fur is removed, the dog's skin may be sensitive and subject to irritation or sunburn. In a dog obedience class, one dog would not sit during the class. It was discovered the dog was recently groomed and most of the fur was removed, which made her skin sensitive.

Using common sense, you can be sure your dog has fur that is manageable, but not so short the dog is uncomfortable. I would suggest looking online for Youtube videos on how to do this. It is quite likely you can find at least a couple that will give you plenty of tips so your dog will look great and be comfortable.

It is best to keep up with the grooming of the dog, because without this proper grooming her fur will likely tangle and become an issue. It is also recommended you bathe the dog anywhere between two and four weeks, because as dirt comes in contact with the fur, it is much easier to tangle. Use the shower attachment on your faucet so it is easier to rinse your pup. Then, follow the shampoo with some conditioner mixed with water, in a cup; rinse thoroughly.

If these guidelines are not followed, it is easy for the dog to get what is called "micro-tangles", which are tiny tangles under the coat and often close to the skin.

Using a good shampoo and thoroughly rinsed, your dog will feel good and be much easier to groom.

-Bathe the dog anywhere between two and four weeks.

-Use a conditioner to make the fur more manageable.

-Use sheers or clippers to cut/trim the fur.

-Brush or groom the dog between shampoos and between cuts.

-Don't let the fur get too long, or it will be difficult to manage.

I'd not take it down to the skin, if you are into Summer where you are. I think I'd clip it rather than shave it however.

You can do it yourself, yes, I cut my poodle's coat every few months. Here's some advice,,,, don't shave it down to bare skin, dogs can get sunburn, cut it short enough to quickly notice any fleas or ticks but not so short that there is bare skin,,, and be prepared to take a while, mine is a toy poodle and it takes three to four hours to groom her.

If you live in a warm enough climate so the dog doesn't feel the cold, yes you can, but why not just clip it short? It's no more effort than shaving.
