Their deflection serves 2 purposes. The misdirection changes the focus and they avoid the confrontation they couldn't defend w/ facts. Trump does the same thing continuously.

Conservatism is a misinformation feedback loop. Anything which supports the conservative narrative is incorporated into the loop with no fact-checking. Anything which challenges the narrative is rejected without thought.

The result is a bubble of lies, misinformation, and "alternative facts" which has been going strong for 40 years. That's why modern conservatives are so ignorant. It's not that they're liars, it's that they know so much that isn't so.
