What to expect in the UK?

Update:

I will be working as a nurse soon in the UK. I'll be assigned in one of the hospitals in Western Sussex. As a Filipino who hasn't gone outside the country, I'd like to ask what sort of things to expect in terms of:

- Culture

- How and what to wear

- People's attitude towards Asians (Filipinos in particular)

- Cost of living in an apartment

- Cost of travel

- Common ways of getting around

Thank you.

    - Culture - There isn't a defined culture like in many countries. People may seem a bit reserved compared to the Philippines.

    - How and what to wear - You can wear what you like. You will find it a bit cool, so wear layers of clothing. A waterproof is handy. West Sussex is on n the East of Great Britain, so is reasonably dry. However, our weather is unpredictable.

    - People's attitude towards Asians (Filipinos in particular) - There are racists all over the World. However, UK is pretty good. There are also laws against racism. You will quickly meet friends at the hospital. There will be other Filipinos but you will also find friends from all over the world!

    - Cost of living in an apartment - Quite expensive. However, the hospital should be able to help. Does your hospital have nurses quarters? Some nurses may house share.

    - Cost of travel - Quite expensive, compared to the Philippines.

    - Common ways of getting around - If you get a car, you can drive for 1 year on an international driving permit but must take a test after that. There are buses and trains.

West Sussex is a very nice rural county with some nice historic towns, such as Chichester, Arundel and Petworth. There are also seaside resorts, like Worthing and Bognor Regis. There are road and rail links, east and west along the coast and also northwards to London.

Welcome to UK. I hope you enjoy it!

    - Culture? We have none because we are repeatly told all other cultures are superior and if we disagree we are racists.

    - How and what to wear? Anything you like. There are really cheap clothes shops like Primark or supposedly better ones like Marks and Spencer unless you're rich and stupid enough to spend money on designer clothes. It makes no difference, they are all made by children in the third world.

    - People's attitude towards Asians (Filipinos in particular)? They'll probably think you're chinese.

    - Cost of living in an apartment? Very expensive in SE England

    - Cost of travel? Also very expensive. Train and bus fares are high and if you have a car, petrol is the third most expensive in the world.

    - Common ways of getting around? Same as any other place, walk, cycle, car, bus , train. All bad. Walk? depends where you live, it might not be a good idea at night. Cycle? Roads far too busy to cycle safely. Car? Terrible traffic, journeys take twice as long as they should. Bus? Unreliable, slow trains? stop running for many reasons, too hot, too cold, leaves on the line, wrong type of snow.....

History. Beautiful Countryside. Ugly unpleasant big cities. Lots of arts and culture. Good bus and rail system but they are expensive. Rents are high.People dress casually almost all the time. You might meet a few racists occasionally but most people are accepting

I would think that the hospital you'll be working for could give you some advice about housing. i know that it's often possible to find notices of rooms for rent in people's houses, which is a good place to get started until you get a feel for the area and know where you want to live. Some people in the uK are ignorant- like anywhere else- but most will see you as a nurse and respect you. The hospital will tell you what to wear to work.
