I plan to take casual snap shots such as a child blowing out candles on his birthday cake at a party.?

Is there any advantage of a G7X Mark ii or other stand alone camera over a $500 smart phone? It would be 1080 without any editing.

If I take any videos it would be limited to 30 seconds for my friends on Facebook or a private video on YouTube.

    Use whatever camera you like,

but if you already own the Canon,

get some of your money's worth out of it by using it.

These days smartphones are delivering almost similar photo quality what you might get with-in 300$ so if you are not a dedicated photographer as a profession then I will highly recommend you to buy high-end camera smartphone example Huawei, sony. Only APS-C or Full-Frame can beat smartphone but lower size sensor mm... not a big difference compared to latest technology smartphone.
