Is it better to drive or fly from San Francisco to Seattle?

I am planning on going on a trip around the United States sometime, and was wondering if it was better to drive or fly from San Francisco to Seattle. It normally takes 12-14 to drive vs around 2 hours flying. Based on the distance, I would fly unless there was something I really wanted to see along the way, and there is some cool scenery along the coast, but I would rather see that on a train rather than by driving because it would be so long. Please tell me what you think is best.

Update:

I don't live in or anywhere near either of these cities, so I would fly into one of those cities and either drive the coast or fly between the cities, and I want to go on the Pacific Coast Highway as well. The only problem is that it will take a long time driving, so I think I would take a train because I could go faster and less stressfully, but still see everything along the way. I've been to California before, but not Oregon or Washington, but I really want to go though.

Update 2:

Thanks A Hunch and Gypsyfish!! I've heard that the plane rides and the train rides along the West Coast are nice. Just like Gypsyfish said, I would probably take the train as long as there aren't too many stops. I would still want to see the big cities and major attractions along the way, but everything else would look better from the train itself. All 3 of the states have very nice scenery, and a view from the train could be as good as stopping at everything.

Update 3:

I think I would want to start at San Diego or Seattle and go down the coast stopping at the major cities and attractions along the coast (Portland, San Francisco, L.A., Big Sur, etc.), and would see San Diego and Seattle on my own. I've heard the drives are fun, but are pretty long. I think I would drive/take the train one way, and make as many stops as necessary and fly the other way, as I could see everything, but still make it shorter. Thanks everyone for answering!!

Update 4:

Overall, distance-wise, it makes more sense to fly between SF and Seattle, because the U.S. is a large country and it takes just a couple hours flying vs 12-14 hours driving, so I think I will ultimately drive/take the train depending on time and costs one way, and fly the other way. Flying the West Coast is cool as well, but driving/taking the train lets me see everything, so I would drive/take the train while going and fly back to the starting city.

There is definitely great scenery along the coast and a few other things. But if time is your concern, driving the coast is going to add many hours (as compared to I-5) of just driving no including any stops you want to make along the way. If you have the time, I would do the drive. There are a lot of people that dream of someday driving Highway 1/101 along the west coast.

I would take the train. You don't have to drive and you see more scenery.

That depends on your idea of 'better'. It's certainly a scenic drive but if, for instance, you really hate driving then maybe it isn't for you.

The most beautiful flights I have ever taken are up / down the US West Coast.

    - You see Yosemite, Tahoe, Crater Lake, the Cascades etc

Problem is there are so many variables...

    - will it light out

    - will it be clear

    - will I be on the "correct" side of the plane (right side going north; left side going south)

    - will I get a window seat that isn't over the wing

There's some amazing scenery, and also some great places to stop if you have time. like Napa Valley. I'd take the train if I weren't going to make several day-long stops along the way.
