    Origin of the word "cute": early 18th century English (in the sense "clever, shrewd"): shortening of "acute".

    And "acute":

    late Middle English (describing a disease or its symptoms): from Latin "acutus", past participle of "acuere" ("to sharpen", which was derived from "acus" ... meaning "needle").

    VERSUS: Derivation of "cuticle": Latin: "cutis" meaning "skin". By the late 15th century, coming to mean "a membrane of the body". Derived from Latin "cuticula", diminutive of "cutis" ("skin’).
