Publishers have been trying to get rid of single player games for ages, claiming people want social games that they can play with friends.
I think Sony has proved them wrong this generation with games like Horizon, God of War and Spiderman.

Gamers are excited because it’s 2019 and consoles running on hard disk drives is so, so ugly. This is a step in the right direction. Don’t blame hardware developers for the dirt tactics employed by software developers or more specifically, publishers. Not to mention that many of these games have these things because of the demand they have in predominantly mobile-oriented markets. Plenty of criticism has time and time again shone the spotlight on the games that do this malpractice, bombing sales and reviews.
Quite simply, the future is exciting but this dystopian micro transaction filled cesspool you describe will only become a reality if more or the same people choose to support it.
