Some babies just won't take pacifiers.. my son is a few months old and he doesn't take pacifiers at all. If I give him one, he'll spit it out within a few seconds. Don't force her to take it. Some baby's just don't like them.

It is stressful when your baby can't suck, but she will in time, I promise.

The first two weeks that our now 26 year old daughter was in the NICU, it would take an hour easily for her to even drink half an ounce. As you are being advised, we too were advised to just keep trying, and we did. One morning when the nurse was putting in her tube to feed her, she suddenly resisted and took the bottle and drank it. That was the day things turned around for her and she took off with being able to drink on her own, and we were able to take her home. : )

If she's in the NICU she is being carefully monitored by the nurses and her physician. They will not let her starve. Premies often have a poor suckling reflex, and if she's being tube fed, they will not let her starve.

If you are still in the hospital, they should have lactation support.

She needs to be feeding every 2-3 hours. If it's been 6 hours and she hasn't taken any milk, you need to head back to the hospital.

There is items you can get that will help her suckle but she needs to be fed before she gets dehydrated.
