some brands charge stupid amounts for low quality equipment because they have a well-known name or logo.

It's a bit like selling T-Shirts with "named" labels or logos, ten times the cost for mediocre quality.

Look at brands like Logitech or Creative for speakers; or Sony, Sennheiser, Audio Technica, Plantronics etc. for headphones / earbuds.

Ignore such as Skullcandy, Beats, Bose....

Consider "2.1" speakers (stereo plus a subwoofer) or even 5.1 surround, if the PC has multiple audio output sockets for surround sound. You can always get a USB sound card with multiple outputs for surround, even for a laptop.

If you would consider over-the-ear headphones instead of earbuds, look at Sony MDR-7506 - they are studio monitor grade headphones, incredibly comfortable, just about indestructible, with ludicrous power handling, excellent frequency response - and less than 100- if you shop around a bit.

Price and quality are Never directly related,

although cheaper is almost always worse.

Use a stereo receiver (new or old) and passive speakers.

You'll be glad you did.
