It's a Pholcus phalangioides, or a "daddy longlegs" (sometimes called a "harvestman"). They are very common in the U.S., and are nothing to be afraid of.

They can be found under any ledge in UK. They can bite and hurt young skin as I was once bitten as a child but they can't do anything to someone older. It was my fault as I was at the pulling the legs off spiders age. They must be the most common even though they are not a true spider.

Not a true spider, these are called harvestman in the order Opiliones. Often called daddy longlegs or grandaddy longlegs.
They make no web, produce no venom and can't bite human skin makes them totally harmless.

Its not a spider at all. Its an opiliones more commonly known as daddy longlegs or harvestmen. Not to be confused with cellar spiders which are also sometimes called daddy longlegs.

You should use your lucky hand and kill it. No worries.

Don't know the technical name for them... We just called them "daddy longlegs" or common garden spiders.
