Does it work on the remote?  It's fairly common in older cars for the wires that bend near the trunk hinge develop a short.

I would start by checking the fuse. It's going to be Fuse 12, 20 AMP, and it will be located under the dash, passenger side. If the fuse is good, then have someone press the button while you have an ear close to the trunk. Does the trunk release actuator make a click when someone hits the button? If so, the actuator is getting power, but is malfunctioning. Adjust or replace the actuator. If there is no click sound, take a test light, or a volt meter, and check to see if there is power going to the actuator when the button is pressed. At the actuator, there will be two wires. One wire will be blue, with a white stripe. Check to see if that wire has power with the button pressed. Also, check to see if the second wire, which is black, has good ground. If the wiring checks out, replace the actuator. If there is an electrical fault, trace the fault, and repair.

the latch mechanism may need lubrication or replacement. You first need to test the switch to make sure it isn't the problem.
