The freedom of the 60's and 70's lead to the slow awareness in the 80's that monster are out there, that leaving teens home alone for hours on end leads to babies and drug use, which all lead to the helicopter paranoid parents of the 90's. In which I was one of, which lead to the lawn mower parents of today as well as the free range parenting styles. The 90's also lead to more parents backing off in mid to later 2000's.

the 1970s in general were a time of anger, pessimism, cynicism and fear due to changing social, political and economic norms...
in pop culture, it seems that when TV turned to color the media in general became more gritty and visceral...and this was no where more evident then its coverage of war and crime...
every night families gathered around their televisions and watched several minutes of bloody coverage from SE Asia or the Middle East...then came the nightly coverage of ongoing crime stories that played out like the weekly thrillers of the movie age...
the Manson Family
John Wayne Gacy
Son of Sam
BTK
the Golden State Killer
the Hillside Strangler
these crimes...and the media hype around them... created a new sub-culture in America built on the notion that monsters lived among us and unseen threats were everywhere...
with the breakdown of the community structure, trust and common ground were replaced by fear and suspicion...distrust of strangers became an actual part of the elementary school curriculum with scary movies about "stranger danger" and "red light people"..
...as is often the case, most of the "demons" came from within....

The American Left has destroyed many things that used to make our culture special.......

I'm not sure to be honest... I think pop culture got more creative and at the same time inspired everyone to feel like they're more relevant than they are. It made them want to feel like victims, good people who can do nothing wrong, drama queens, etc while before a lot of people did things because it was more of a duty and just a proper way of behaving. There was more of a sense of embarrassment and responsibility. And of course, when enough people around you become obnoxious, you have to deal with constant annoyances and become obnoxious yourself, so that fueled the flames. Nowadays we have political propaganda infiltrating people's minds and controlling their thoughts, personalities, and actions as well. Like some people believe having proper etiquette and manners is a "leftist plot" to destroy America... (not that leftists actually have decent etiquette/manners)
