Will efforts to impeach Trump backfire, and make him more popular with his cult and win him the next election?

Trump's base of support is smaller than people think it is. See below. There is a large group of people who voted for him in 2016 but went Democratic in 2018. These are the people who've caused his approval rating to remain low, who do not support everything he says and does, and who, with Democrats, can and probably will vote him out in 2020. They've not been very impressed by him, by the fact that he hasn't kept his rash, uninformed promises, that he's harmed our international relationships and reputation, that he's all juvenile bluster and name-calling. The latest mess is only going to cause those people to want him out of office, for the presidency to be held once again by a fit, qualified, dignified person.

The solid Trumpkin base, the one comprising people who'll support Trump no matter what, just isn't big enough to overcome all that.

Just the opposite as we are beginning to see Republicans pulling away from Trump because they want to protect themselves and not go down with the sinking Trump ship.

I hope not, but never underestimate the stupidity of the general public.

America would indeed be lucky if the attack against their democratic republic came from only a single front. It is possible that the legally mandated impeachment inquiry may persuade a few weak minded voters to vote for Trump the Martyr. But unfortunately , the attack against America has several fronts. The full impact of Russian interference in 2020 has yet to be determined - it's only October 2019 folks. It would be strategically unwise for Putin to reveal his attack strategy so early in the 2020 campaign.

And "we, the people" have yet to learn how far the GOP war plans go to suppress and intimidate the voters next year. Not to mention the constant erupting volcano of Alt. Right conspiracy theories , misinformation and bald faced lies to the public.

Anyone who believes that the 2020 general election will be carried off fairly and corruption free , is dangerously naive. Western democracies are hanging on by a thread and the outcome is anything but secure at this point.

He is already popular with his cult. Its the independents that are tiring of this politically motivated assault.

Except Bill Clinton was popular. Trump’s approval ceiling is 40% which is not re-election safe.

Whatever happens, Trump will remain unpopular with most of the public.

The 2020 election is critical to the legitimacy of our republic. If Trump wins again, we’re dealing with autocracy. Not democracy.

His base is already with him and they all have only one vote. So how would being more popular with them make any difference?

    You side with Demoncrats.

It worked for Bill Clinton, it will work for Trump too.
