Cos I know Mercedes and Range rover are well liked among many people.

If they were a good product, you'd see lots of them running around town.
You don't=they're not.

They build beautiful cars, but have never been known for being extremely reliable.

According to the Holy Trinity of Clarkson, May & Hammond, you're not a true petrolhead, until you've owned an Alfa.

The rust issues were addressed long ago, but it's not such a prestige brand now it belongs the Fiat/Chrysler group. The souped-up models will be more prone to mechanical and electrical failure than equivalent cars in the popular German and Japanese brands.
However if you drive an Alpha Romeo you won't be considered a 'sheep'; just change it for a new one before it reaches middle-age.

Alfa-Romeo has a great heritage . . . for one thing, their head test/race driver in the 1930s was one Enzo Ferrari! However, they are now just a division of FIAT - which also owns Maserati and Ferrari.....in others words, their cheaper line of "sporty" cars - a glorified FIAT - and like all their products an unreliable, trouble-prone, expensive to fix oddity that will rust away in 2 years.
Yes - I speak from experience. It was a grand car, fun to drive on the rare occasions it ran . . . nice comfortable seats: I would go out to the garage and sit in it during those months I waited for parts to come.
