Is Chicken pox a sickness of the past?

Chickenpox is one of several diseases for which there is an effective vaccine that can be safely given to young kids. All children ought to be vaccinated and that would eliminate the disease. However, there is a lot of anti-vaccination nonsense spread via social media and a lot of parwents are reading it as true and not giving theri kids the protection they diserve.

I agree, LOL, it seems so commonplace to the kids now. Like oh yes, I had my chicken pox vaccine.  It is awesome, because as you know, we wish we had never had to suffer the chickenpox they were miserable. So great that we have this for the kids. It Wards off shingles later in life. That would be another really cool Advanced that we now have a shingles vaccine however you can only get it once you're 55 and older. There are freaky things that have happened like the return of whooping cough which we now need to re vaccinate for. I think everyone would be pro-vaccine but the problem is that, for example someone like me, I have history of autoimmune in my family so we are to be sure that we have themerosal free (Mercury free) vaccines. Any single vial vaccine is mercury free and Walgreens has them as well as a number of other places but you have to ask otherwise thimerosal is bad for the health and is cited by a number of parents with children with autism as being a precursor to their autism. When I was growing up, we had nosodes, which are homeopathic versions of vaccines and they were acceptable for going into school. It gets frustrating, because you see these websites for people are almost angry with each other over vaccines and what they don't understand is that we all want vaccines, We're All Pro vaccine unless we are uneducated, arguing with someone who has no education doesn't help, the problem is the mercury in the vaccines and we have to be sure that we are all receiving Mercury free vaccines or we will continue to have such a rash of autoimmune conditions as we have now as well as a rash of autism which sometimes also gets link to other procedures but all of which lead back to Mercury. Just had to add my two cents in there.  😊  so, we probably should call it anti Mercury and then people say okay there is no Mercury oh, yes there is, if you ask the pharmacist they will emphatically tell you that yes there is unless they are single vials.

I have a PHD in Vaccinology and I can tell you that no vaccine is effective in preventing diseases.  It's actually your own immune system that is doing all the work not the vaccine.

There IS a vaccine for chicken pox. Please have your child get it. I had chicken pox many years ago before vaccines. Two full weeks of hell.

Chicken pox is becoming a thing of the past, but it's not yet. The chicken pox vaccine wasn't  developed until the late 1970's and wasn't being administered until well after that time. Before then, young kids weren't vaccinated against chicken pox - there was no vaccine against it.  

well friend it's not just important to get rid of chickenpox because it's an aggravating childhood illness it's important to get rid of the chickenpox because it comes back when you're an adult in the form of shingles which is worse than chicken pox so if we keep children from catching chicken pox in the first place and keep people immunized against the chickenpox virus we're going to get rid of the shingles as well

I never had it growing up, but I was actually exposed to, never got it. Then again, I was born with natural immunity to many things.

The vaccine was introduced in 1995. 

"Before the varicella vaccine was licensed in the U.S. in 1995, there were approximately 100 deaths and more than 11,000 hospitalizations a year from chickenpox."

Another bad thing about Chickenpox is that it can lurk inside you and come back as an incredibly painful Shingles infection in later life.
