about 2003 subaru outback. did the engine get ruined?

hi i just bought a 2003 subaru outback with 180000 miles on it. and the idler pully on the timing belt was making noise so my dad thought we should change it. he did not line up the timing lines before he tried replaceing the pulley and the timing got all messed up. he tried starting the car when the timing was incorrect. Does this meen he ruined the engine? please help. or can it still be saved?

NO it is NOT ruined! Get the car to the SUBARI dealership or get a HAYNES manual and START ALL OVER again! The WORST case scenario is that VALVES may be BENT now! This is NOT that pricey, but TIME CONSUMING to repair! CONGRATS on the SUBARU! It is a GREAT CAR and is BASED upon PORSCHE technology! It has a FLAT engine that is EASY to work on and SAVES SPACE as well! There is a TIMING BELT< WATER PUMP Kit for these ars and you are BEST by using it! CONTINENTAL makes them I think, the BEST ones with NEW PULEYS etc and a HEPU water pump from Germany!  You can go to YOUTUBE and watch someone replace the TIMING BELT the RIGHT WAY and learn from it, too! BYE NOW!>>>P.S> the NEWER ones have TIMNG CHAINS that are MORE reliable! Use ONLY PENNZOIL ULTRA PLATINUM or TOTAL ENERGY OIL for ASIAN cars to keep it TIGHT and RUNNING RIGHT! The PENNZOIL gives a warranty to 500,000 miles! YOU CANNOT beat that! AND it is MADE from NATURAL GAS, and NOT crude oil! It is BEST for YOU<the CAR< and the ENVIRONMENT as well! You will NEVER need new PCV HOSES or VACUUM LINE  this way and the CONVERTER and o2 sensor will last INDEFINITELY!

if the timing is off enough to cause the pistons to hit the valves, then you at the least ruined the valves.

Valve job and new timing belt components will help if they are put together correctly/.

The car should be on its second timing belt replacement by now.  Replace the whole timing belt assembly and not just the pulley just to make sure.  Get a qualified person to do the job.  If the car starts and runs good, all is well.  If not, you might need a new engine.  Good luck.

Most likely not, he just has a do-over to line up the marks and try again.

No he just messed up the timing, you need to get someone who understands cars to reset the timing for you.
