Why did Jesus say that religion that is acceptable is to look after orphans and widows?

Was He suggesting that religious rituals can become empty and not fruitful?

Was He referring to the corruption of religion that the Pharisees brought their society?

Update:

Indeed He was warning us about religion. If it doesn't result in actually helping people and being fruitful, it's not any good.

The entire purpose of our religion is to change our hearts and our actions, so that we are like Jesus. Jesus spent His life loving and serving others. If our religious devotion does not lead us to love and serve like He did, then we are not living it right.

He was referring to the purpose of life: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"

If this is too big right now, pick some good you can do for someone, orphaned, starving, homeless, unwed, sick, in prison, naked, or afraid. it doesn't matter as much as you just doing SOMETHING. Giving money is nice but what are you actually DOING? Anything you do for yourself in this life is a waste of Spirit.

He was saying that people who are very poor need help and help should be given. No social programs then.
