Why can’t I eat grapefruit while I take antidepressants? :(?
I’m taking lexapro on the list of things not to use while taking the drug it doesn’t say grapefruit but I brought a whole bunch of them today and my mom stopped me and said It’s dangerous to eat them while I’m on my medication. I called my pharmacist, she told me it’s not recommended for me to eat them. But I still want to so badly

''...grapefruits contain a group of chemicals, furanocoumarins, which can affect drug metabolism – the amount of time it takes for a drug to be broken down by the body.
The chemical inhibits an enzyme that breaks down drugs, this can cause more ‘active’ drug to be present in the body than was intended with the given dose. This can then trigger unpleasant, and sometimes serious, side effects.''

The acids and quinine in grapefruit can affect medications (as can oranges to a lesser extent).
You can eat grapefruit, but not for at least 4 hours before or after taking the meds.

Grapefruit juice decreases the activity of the cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes that are responsible for breaking down many drugs and toxins in your liver. Grapefruit contains compounds known as furanocoumarins that block the CYP3A4 enzymes. Therefore, the drugs do not get broken down and blood levels of the drug may rise, resulting in a risk for new or worsened side effects. So, it is not just avoiding grapefruit itself but also grapefruit juice, too.

Seriously you should stop taking antidepressants. If you feel depressed then you need to join a sports team and get more exercise
