Is a Diesel engine even worth it in 2020?
Considering getting a truck. Really would love a 2500 Cummins or a super duty power stroke. I understand WHY the epa did the regen and the def but I know it kinda makes more of a hassle for the owner.
Really just think a big diesel would be fun but also useful like other guys out there. But idk if it’s even worth a damn

Diesels have been quite efficient engines. If you NEED the efficiency, diesel is for you. The fuel is not cheaper than gasoline and you also must use exhaust fluid to control emission, an added cost and worry. Diesel engines are not necessarily more durable than gasoline engines, but can be simpler .

They do require maintenance and parts and labor can be brutal. So, price all of the common replacement parts and weigh those factors against a common gasoline engine truck.
You have to use blended fuel or add a lot of diesel fuel additives once the temperature drops below freezing. Diesel fuel has a lot of moisture in it and it gels easily in the winter months.

What are you going to use the truck for? If you need to haul or tow heavy loads, a diesel is the way to go. If you just want something to drive around town or commute to and from school or work, then stick with a gasoline engine.
A new truck with a diesel engine will cost several thousand dollars more to buy than the same truck with a gasoline engine. While the diesel will get slightly better fuel mileage, the fuel can cost up to 50 cents per gallon more than regular grade unleaded gasoline. A truck with a diesel engine will also cost more to maintain than one with a gasoline engine.
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) and exhaust filter regeneration is not really a factor. You can buy DEF in bulk for less than $3.00 per gallon at most truck stops, and an average privately owned pickup truck will use less than 10 gallons per year. I've owned my diesel powered pickup for five years and have NEVER had to do a filter regen.

700 plus newton meters torque. If you have a need for that, you buy a diesel. If not, get a gas engine.

Diesels NEED the be driven. so if a one-trip a day truck, get a gas engine............

Depends on what your uses are.
Diesel is better for heavier loads because of the torque but sorta suck for other reasons.

I don't understand guys and their infatuation with diesel engines. A diesel engine is great if you are towing something or maybe driving long distance. But if it's just for transportation, then you're paying more for the fuel plus DEF. Most diesel engines get crap for mileage if you're driving short distances. So if you have a valid reason, towing or long haul, makes sense. If not, get gasoline truck.
