So in a unit what exotic pets (or what pets) can you have (e.g. lizards, snakes, birds, mice, rats, squirrels, frogs, fish, shrimp, etc).

I don't live there, but my gist is about any native species of the above.
Oz has a rather tight lid on import of animals so you need to check with authorities what animals may be imported. Invasive species and vector disease is the concern.
Years back, a friend imported some Delana spiders for a movie(Arachnophobia)
and after filming, they would not permit them to be returned so a lot of people wound up with pet spiders. New Zealand if I recall.
