    He had a high tolerance for pain, I guess. The man was an elite athlete who also played basketball, rugby, and danced in the Bolshoi Ballet to keep in shape during the winter.

    Because he was a tough SOB. I mean, the guy pitched to 3 batters AFTER his leg was fractured. You would never see a player do that these days.

    Remember, too, that players were on yearly contracts back then so they had to play if they wanted to get paid.

    Gibby made $60K in 1967 but because he was able to come back quickly and lead STL to a World Series win he was given a $25K raise in '68. If he'd sat out the rest of the year he wouldn't have gotten that raise.

    Ronnie Lott severed a finger in an NFL game;

    went back on the field,& continued playing.
