What to do when your boss tells you that if you are on time, you are already late?

am early, but i am rarely late. When I do arrive early, i get my bosses tea ready, and fill the copier and do other things to make it easier for when she gets there.

Today my phone rang at 5 minutes after 8. My boss asked me where i was cause she came to the office an hour early. I was still at home cause in my mind, i thought i had a bit more time, and i said so. She told me that if i was the kind of employee who arrived on time, then i might as well stay home. She said that on time, meant i was already an hour late because there was too much to do to wait. I have been in tears most of the day. btw..she did come to me and more gently told me to take a break for lunch.

It sounds as if the boss doesn't know you often come in early and do all that preparatory stuff.

    So TELL HER.

Years ago, I worked in an office with a staff of around 100. The office started work at 9am sharp, some staff would arrive around 8:30 - 8:45, to have a chat and a coffee before work started. I was always up early, so rather than sit around at home I asked my boss to let me have a set of keys, and that I would open the office at 7am every day, I didn't expect to be paid for the extra hours I worked (and I wasn't!), it just suited me. So, every day for over three years I got to the office at 7am opened up, had a coffe and started work. Then one day, I stopped for fuel on the way to work, and didn't get to the office until 7:30. When I arrived, my boss was standing there waiting, he wanted an early start as he had a meeting later, but he had left his keys at home. He had a real go at me for being 'late'! At the end of that day, I gave him back the office keys and reverted to starting work at 8:45. No only did he lose the extra work that I did for free, a number of other staff also cam in early and worked for free, they all stopped too.

She can't make you come in an hour early. Especially if you are not paid. Report her to the board of labor if she is trying to make you work without pay. She is the wrong one. If I were you I would look for a better employer that values its employees.

Ignore her.  if the company is paying you from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with an hour for lunch, you need to be there at 8:00 am, not 7:00 am.  She's not entitled to unpaid work.  I wouldn't say anything to her but I'd consider when the COVID-19 mess is behind us and the economy is looking better to start looking for another job.
