Are the defendants/plaintiffs that appear on Judge Judy and other court programs compensated for their appearances?

    Yes, absolutely.  According to a quick google search, they get $100 for an appearance, and $35/day.  Plus, the real motivating factor, any damages are paid BY THE SHOW.  So when the Judge orders the defendant to pay the plaintiff $5k, the SHOW pays it.  Thus you're basically at NO RISK.

    The show otherwise just acts like an arbitration agreement.
