The IRS pushed TAX DUE Day to July 15th. If we filed a request for six month extension, would the returns be due Oct 15 or Jan 15, 2021 ?

Update:

I have gotten as many OCT 15 dates (six months from April 15) as Jan 15 (six months from July 15). There is NO official answer from the IRS (yet). I am wondering if I wait until July 14th to FILE extension (I know payment is still due then) what the IRS will do...?

All these comments are from people who are SURE they are right, including those who say Oct 15 and those who say Jan 15.  Nowhere on the IRS website do they give a definitive answer, however.  Note that the instructions to Form 4868 say: "Generally, we can’t extend the due date of your return for more than 6 months (October 15, 2020, for most calendar year taxpayers)."  Thus, a prudent approach would be to assume the extension is only to Oct 15, and then check back on the IRS website as that date approaches.

6 months from July 15. An extension is only an extension to FILE. Money due is still due 7/15.
