Estuaries are shallow and not very deep but can still form thick accumulations of sediments.?

Easy.  The  water   from a  fast  moving  river or stream slows  down   when it   widens out  the   carried  silt   drops out  and   forms sediments   That is  also the  cause of  deltas   at   river  mouths.
