You’re likely more at risk something going wrong with the surgery then contracting this virus

I don't work in the UK but I used to, and I work in Ireland so our systems and procedures are fairly similar ...

Hospitals are basically being divided into quarantined sections. I, for example, am on a ward with Covid-19 patients. I am pretty much isolated from the rest of the hospital. I travel to work on my bicycle, have a seperate entrance to use, and don't access 'public' areas of the hospital. Similarly, other nurses and doctors are isolated from us. Cleaning in the public areas has been stepped up. Plus we are all frequently tested to ensure we minimise the risk of spreading the virus. So the first thing I'd say is that every measure to stop you contracting Covid-19 while you are in hospital is being done.

In terms of what you can do ... gloves and a face mask will probably help but you will be given these by the staff in the hospital. The main concern is staff spreading the virus to you, so they will be the ones for whom the PPE is important.

Critical care is in a different part of UK hospitals. There is no cross contamination. No way would the hospital allow you to come if there was a risk.

Wear a face mask. Keep at least 6 feet away from people. Wash your hands after touching frequently touched areas like door handles, elevator buttons. Never touch your face, eyes, mouth, nose unless you wash your hands thoroughly first including underneath the fingernails.
