What’s up with this man always saying “I’m awesome” “I’m the king” ?

Question

I’ve been talking to this guy. 
He is a chatty guy and he is not rude or anything. But in every subject we talk about,he says he is “the best” “getting paid more than normal people” “I’m awesome” 
Etc.   It’s good to be confident and all but I am just curious why he thinks he needs to keep telling people how “awesome” he is? 
Then I say “you are!” and then he says “haters gonna hate” like if I was a hater so I apologised to him. But then there he goes again “lol I’m not that sensitive. don’t worry” blah blah

Is it him that being annoying or am I the odd one here thinking this is getting annoying?

I'd have to ditch a mate like that, because I can't stand boasting,but some people boast and say how great they are to try and convince people they actually are, because deep down inside they probably have many insecurities.
