Which day is the initial of a week?

Which day, Sunday or Monday is the initial?

In Japan, Sunday.

This Sunday has passed in Japan on 17th/May. and 24th is the next.

So sometimes I'm confused to say this/next/coming/following.

And If it were 20th/May/Wed,  This Monday was 18th/May which has already passed? If It was,  Is it less natural way to say it than last Monday?I think my friend in H.K has the same problem and he is also confusing that the coming and the following are the same but it's not, is it?

it doesn't matter what day the week starts. Next Monday or "this coming Monday" is just the next one that comes. "The following Monday" is the next one after the date you are specifically referring to.

Most of the world follows the Christian tradition that Monday was the first day, and Sunday the final day when god rested. This is what led, in part, to the advent of the weekend, and the process of counting each week from Monday, when work resumes. As with most arbitrary asignations, once a significant portion of the population adopted this practice, the rest of us just sort of went with it for the sake of convenience. Realistically, concepts such as day names, and a weekly cycle of 7 days, are human inventions that have no bearing on the way the world itself operates, and its exactly as rational to choose thursday as the start point for a week as monday or sunday.
