Not if you have money to burn.
I got this laptop I am using that was less than a year old and looked brand new. My neighbor was throwing it away because it wasn't working.
It was an easy fix that didn't cost me anything. I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled the operating system. That was 3-4 years ago, I have been using it ever since and I have other more expensive laptops.
If I was going to buy a new computer, I would buy a refurbished one. They are like automobiles, as soon as you drive it off the lot it depreciates (never again worth what you paid for it).
But that's just me, I've got $2,700 but not to burn. If you do, then have fun watching it disappear (poof, like magic).
But if you have to throw it away in 657 days, because it cost more than it's worth to have fixed and out of warranty, you're welcome to toss it to me ;)

It depends on what you need the laptop for. It's not too much if you need the capability.

Well, my coworker spent $4500 on a laptop (for gaming) so that’s not expensive in comparison

Kinda want to say it depends on what you're using it for, but far be it for me to say what others can spend their yens on.
I wouldn't DARE drop that much for one personally.

that’s above average price. I wouldn’t spend that much on a laptop but everyone is different.
