How much Spanish should I learn?

I’m retiring soon and moving to southern Spain from the US. Either Malaga or Marbella or somewhere else along the Mediterranean coast. I know just a little

Spanish. Can I just learn more as I go along after I get there.

This is not a “troll” question. It’s for real. But I’m still going to ask anonymous because of the meanies.

Perhaps a basic course before you go might get you going, and you will certainly learn more when you are living there. But note that you will be in right in the tourist zone, so (British) English and German will be readily understood by many of the locals.

I assume you have got all the legal bits sorted, such as visas, and permission to be a resident of Spain.  Without all those bits sorted you will not be allowed to live in Spain.

The coast of Spain has been dealing with British tourists for decades. You won't have any trouble finding people who speak English.
