Can Dolby Atmos speakers be placed in other locations?

So I have an Onkyo  TX-NR686 and i currently have a 7.1 setup. To use the Atmos, i have to convert it from 7.1.0 to 5.1.2 by changing the 6th and 7th speaker to up-firing speakers (L/R Rear Surround), which means i loose the 2 speakers. My questions is, do they have to be on top of the left/right front speakers to fire up or can i just place them in the back in their original location (or anywhere in that matter)?

You can put them anywhere you like,

but some locations will make their effects worse rather than better.

They should be forward toward the front somewhere..It's similar to placing your rear speakers in the front... I mean you will still get some kind of sound, but its not a proper placement...I think you would be better off just leaving it as a 7.1 configuration the way you have it ..and use a simulated Amos setting...
