Do you think it's pointless wearing a mask on intercontinental flights since we have to take it off to eat and drink anyway?

No, that isn't pointless. Masks still minimixe exposure to others.

well, if you don't mind contracting the virus, then do as you wish.  But it's a real pain in the *** if you do get it. Also, seat belts won't save people 100% of the time but they're mandated by law because they do save lives most of the time.

If it limits the possibility of transmission, I can't see that it's a bad thing.

The more you wear it, the more you limit your exposure to droplets.  So you may catch the plague during the time you eat, but you have less opportunity to inhale a droplet of plague the more you wear a mask

No, because if you are wearing it for most of the time you won't be potentially passing as many germs to other people. The mask is mainly to protect others from getting infection from infected people or hidden carriers, but it will also keep out some of the virus aerosol from the air which you breathe. The N95 ones are better at doing the latter, but may still be in short supply due to being needed by frontline workers.
