    It's a perceived accomplishment that can seldom be attained.  So constant frustration and discontent ensues. 

    So yes, psychological damage results. 

    It may also be learned behavior, not genetic.

    No, it's what all babies want. We live in a culture that encourages it in people who should know better. I'll add there's one or two things that actually do make you feel better right away, like beautiful music.
